The Position
Strategic Analytics is a growing team at Arch. The team develops innovative predictive models and analytical tools to improve profitability and growth. Advanced analytics techniques play a critical role in this mission. To be successful, we need to develop powerful models, tools and insights that give Arch a unique, competitive advantage. As a Strategic Analytics Business Analyst, you will play a crucial role in developing analytical led solutions to business issues. You will work closely with senior stakeholders in underwriting to identify issues and develop actions which are data led to drive business enhancements. You will support the development of underwriting tools by the wider Strategic Analytics team and utilize these to support underwriting changes.
Job Responsibilities
- Work closely with underwriting teams to understand business issues and challenges
- Design and structure solutions to support business needs
- Work closely with data scientists, implementation teams and business units to build and implement solutions
- Provide regular feedback to underwriting teams on their performance and usage of implemented solutions
- Collaborate in cross-functional teams and share ideas to solve complex business problems
- Build and maintain strong partnerships and serve as a trusted business advisor to clients and other stakeholders
- Understand and challenge the output from advanced predictive models including GLMs and machine learning models
- Develop powerful insights using a variety of analytical tools, techniques and technologies.
- Discover, explore and analyze internal and external datasets for the purpose of delivering underwriting improvements
- Help establish best practices and repeatable processes for the Strategic Analytics team.
Required Skills/Experience
- 8+ years’ experience in analytics roles, of which 5+ years in the insurance industry. Experience in a commercial lines setting is an advantage.
- An understanding of typical insurance underwriting and pricing processes, with an experience working on a mixture of traditional and digital products being an advantage
- Ability to review underwriting metrics and processes using analytical approaches and create proposals to deliver underwriting improvements in a data led manner
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills; ability to convey complex concepts to people across the organization
- Exceptional teamwork skills required to play a key role in cross-functional teams. Ability to collaborate and build trusting relationships with business partners
- Natural curiosity to understand the world around you and question as needed
- Comfortable handling ambiguous concepts and breaking down complex problems into manageable pieces
Desired Skills/Experience
- Track record of delivering significant business value from small or non-standard data sets
- Understanding of statistical theory, predictive modeling, data mining and other advanced analytical techniques
- Proven hands-on experience developing analysis in an insurance setting including loss ratio, frequency/severity, pure premium, claims modeling
- Experience developing, launching and monitoring new and existing insurance products
Education
Degree in statistics, mathematics, engineering or similar quantitative fields; or significant experience in advanced data analytics
